Fact Sheet

Location
Beho Beho is known as 'wansalishi' which means when translated from the swahili 'the pioneer'. The first camp in the Northern sector of the Selous game reserve, its stone cottages, perched on the lower slopes of Namikwera Hill overlooking Kipalala Hill, offer panoramic views over the Rufiji river flood plain. 145 miles south west of Dar es Salaam, as the crow flies, the camp is 3 miles from the grave of Frederick Courteney Selous.

Climate
The Selous Game reserve is situated between 8° and 10° south of the Equator, so it enjoys very warm sunny days and warm evenings. The hillside location of Beho Beho enjoys cooling breezes most afternoons. In the 'rainy' season, Nov/Dec and April/May there is heavy rainfall during part of the day.

Accommodation
Beho Beho has 8 individual very spacious Bandas, (stone built and palm thatched cottages) furnished with king-sized beds, Zanzibari day beds, writing desks and comfortable 'suite' furniture. The front of the banda is totally open and extends on to a spacious verandah. The banda can be secured for the night with 'tented curtains' or left open as desired. Each banda has a separate dressing room leading into an en suite bathroom with twin basins, high flush WC and an 'open air' shower.

The main house
Furnished in the style of a private house with comfortable seating and dining areas the most noticeable thing is that there are few walls. Shaded and protected by a huge palm thatched roof there is also a full sized billiards table, the Eagle's nest for private dining and lots of cosy nooks. Meals are a moveable feast and are not confined to the formal dining area. There are several lookouts where breakfast and lunch are served and of course areas for dining under the stars. Bush Breakfasts and picnics are also arranged for longer safaris.

Transportation

Road - Beho Beho is accessible by road with 4WD vehicles only, from either the northern gate and regional park HQ of Matambwe (70kms - 2 hrs) or the western gate of Mtemere (110 km - 3 hours).

Plane - By plane from Dar es Salaam, Beho Beho airstrip is within 1km from the camp on a raised plateau bordered with trenches from the first World War. The flight time is approximately 1 hour.

Train - By scheduled train you can reach Beho Beho from Fuga station, which is a 1½ hour game drive through the plains and dry rivers found in the area. The train takes 4/5 hours along the Tazara railway line, which is the Northern boundary to the Selous.

Electricity
Beho Beho has it's own generator supply giving 240v 50hz electricity. There are lights and power points in each banda offering electricity for recharging computer, video or cine camera batteries. We use standard three pin plugs with square pins as in the UK.

Water
Is supplied from a bore hole and is pumped up to tanks above the camp. Guests are advised not to drink the water from the tap and bottled water is supplied for guests during their stay at Beho Beho.

Hot Water
There are solar panels located outside each banda, which provide sufficient hot water for showers in the morning and the evening. Most days are usually sunny and hot so there is no problem having a hot shower in the daytime - but if too much water is run off in the late afternoon it may not be hot the following morning.

Children
It is felt that this style of camp is not suitable for young children and whilst we do not allow children under 12 years to stay at the camp, parents should consider whether this is the type of camp that is suitable for their child. Children (over 12 years) who have an interest in wildlife and who are comfortable in an adult environment thoroughly enjoy the camp.

Communications
Beho Beho is in daily radio contact with Dar es Salaam and messages can be relayed to and from Beho Beho via our base camp on +255 22 260 0353. There is a personal computer set up in the Study with internet connection and Skype for guests use. It is also possible to download camera sim cards on to a CD Rom.

Private Groups & Conferences
Beho Beho is an ideal location for small residential conferences, seminars and presentations. Private groups are also welcomed and special arrangements can be made for individual requirements.

Swimming Pool
The swimming pool has magnificent views along the Kipalala valley. There are many areas offering private sunbathing or quiet relaxation in the shade.

Safaris
Safaris in the Selous game reserve must be accompanied by an armed game Scout.

Game Drive - These are in our special adapted 4WD vehicles which offer raised seating for better game viewing. Game drives are best taken early in the morning or at dusk.

Walking - The wilderness of Africa will be yours as you walk through the bush in the vicinity of Beho Beho. Many different tracks can be followed with either a circular walk returning to the camp or a pre-arranged location can be made for you to be collected by a safari vehicle.

Lake Tagalala & Maji Moto - After a short Game drive you will arrive at Lake Tagalala for your boating safari. The lake is surrounded by a number of natural springs which attracts amazing birdlife as well as a large Hippo and crocodile population. After a bush breakfast a short walk takes you to the hot sulphur springs, Maji Moto where you swim in the deep natural pools before returning to Beho Beho.

The Beho Beho Experience
In order to enjoy the Beho Beho experience to the full it is recommended that guests stay for a minimum of 3 nights.

Guiding
Beho Beho has a number of qualified resident guides under the direction of Sean Lues who will plan each individual guest's safari itinerary.

Clothes
For most of the year the lightest and most comfortable clothing is recommended, preferably of natural fibre. The heat is dry and the sun can be fierce, so long sleeves are recommended for safaris. A sun hat or bush hat is an essential item on safari. Sometimes in the evenings the drop in temperature may require a light sweater to be worn. It is advisable to select clothes in shades of brown, green, khaki etc when interacting with the bush. White is not advisable when game driving or walking and certain shades of blue attract flying insects. However in the evenings 'you will be pleased to know' all colours and patterns are acceptable.

Laundry
Laundry is collected from your banda each morning for washing drying and pressing and will be returned in the late afternoon. Everything is hand washed and great care is taken to ensure that all fabrics are washed appropriately, however if you have something that requires special attention please let us know.

Special Occasions
Great care and pride will be taken in organising a special occasion or event during a stay at Beho Beho. We can provide the right atmosphere and menu for a birthday, anniversary, special dinner or lunch.

Hospitality
The resident 'family' of guides, managers and staff are there to make sure that each guest enjoys the Beho Beho experience to the full. It is designed to be a 'home' in the bush rather than a hotel or a safari lodge or camp. Guests who feel at home will suddenly find that this is one of the most beautiful places to stay in Africa.

Seasons
Beho Beho is closed from mid March to early June each year - Seasons vary according to rains and flight schedules.
